Fall Season In Review

It was another successful season for fall varsity sports at Hackley, highlighted by girls’ cross country winning Ivy’s and NYSAIS,  football going undefeated, and the boys’ soccer team winning NYSAIS.

Cross Country: The girls’ cross country team had one of the most impressive accomplishments this season, when they dominated the Ivy League championships. At the Ivy League Championships, Claire Gomba finished first, Julia Stevenson finished second, Ally Mueller finished sixth, Greer Levin finished eighth, Lindsay Schechter finished ninth, and Laura Seebacher finished 11th. After this impressive showing, the girls travelled to the NYSAIS championship, where they won their first championship since 2003. The team was led by Gomba, a second place finish, Stevenson, a fifth place finish, and Mueller, a fourteenth place finish. While the boys team did not place as well in the Ivy League Championships or NYSAIS Championships, the team is heavily comprised of underclassmen, and should be competitive in the years to come. The boys’ team finished seventh in the Ivy League Championships and eighth in the NYSAIS Championship.

Football: The football team enjoyed their first undefeated season since 2001, going 8-0. As of November 9th, the team was ranked 6th in Class B.  Hackley’s biggest game of the season ended up being their most impressive game. Traveling to Albany to take on ranked opponent Peru, without starting QB Joey McDermott, the team dominated en route to a 42-6 win. Coach Phil Treglia has amassed a 15-1 record in his first two seasons.

Girls’ Soccer: The girls’ soccer team claimed their first Ivy League title this season, compiling a 8-1-4 record. Hackley claimed the number one seed in the NYSAIS playoffs, and had the most dramatic moment of the season in their first round game against Poly. The game was tied 0-0 throughout all of regular time, and throughout the entirety of overtime. But with just three seconds left, Hackley scored to avoid Pk’s and to advance in the tournament. Hackley played Horace Mann in another game that ended up going to overtime, but lost on a goal in the last minutes of OT.

Field Hockey: The field hockey team had a great season this year, especially since they lost 14 seniors last year. Even though most considered this to be a rebuilding year, the team finished one win away from a consecutive Ivy League title, and made it to the finals of the NYSAIS Championships. Even though the team struggled in the championships, they finished with a final record of 12-5-1.

Boys’ Soccer: The boys’ soccer team faced adversity throughout the entire year, highlighted by injuries. At one point during the year, the team was missing six starters. But the team didn’t let this hinder their championship hopes, and thanks to a deep bench, persevered throughout the entire year. The team had dramatic wins, such as the one against Trinity on Alumni Day, and a lot of blowouts. All of these wins amounted to a 13-3-1 record, and a second seed in the NYSAIS tournament. After Poly Prep beat them in the final game of the season, and celebrated in front of the Hackley team, Hackley got revenge with a 2-0 win in the NYSAIS championship. This marked their first NYSAIS Championship since 2001.

Girls’ Tennis: The girls’ tennis under new head coach David Sykes showed a great deal of promise this season. The team was mostly made up of underclassmen, so the experienced gained by the girls this year was important. With the progress this year, the future is bright.
