When I was growing up, I was conditioned to believe that being feminine or “girly” was a weakness rather than a strength. But, as I’ve begun to grow into who I am as a woman, I’ve    come to understand that femininity has a unique and incredible power of its own that deserves recognition. My concentration works to exhibit the grade and vigor of the female figure — in large and small scales — with equally elegant floral accentuations to demonstrate the intensity, beauty, and strength of femininity.
My concentration began simply with just the juxtaposition of florals and the female figure, but I wanted to not just place the two subjects together, but to integrate them into each other; I felt that the femininity and impact would be stronger if the florals and women were intertwined. First, I tried placing women into flowers where it seemed the petals protected the women. I started placing flowers over girls’ eyes, and then having the flowers be the only part of the girl’s eyes that were visible, as if they were coming out of her. I also attempted a more dramatic interpretation of my concentration with one piece. However, although I loved the detail and tone of it, I felt that it accentuated smaller details rather than my central concentration ideas. After this piece, I played with having the flowers growing from or physically being a part of the body. The physical connection between the different women and the flora created a symbiotic relationship between the two subjects: the both supported and enhanced each other. Also, I began to make much smaller pieces during this time because I wanted to demonstrate that a lot of power could still exist in a small package.
