Ms. Clingen’s advisory was victorious in the Class of 2022’s boat regatta on First Friday. Friday 7 September marked the first First Friday in which the annual freshman boat regatta was held in the Johnson Center for Health and Wellness.

In keeping with First Friday tradition, the class of 2022 delved into a day of boat building for the Annual Freshman Boat Race this past Friday.

Teams of students spent the  cloudy morning running around campus in hopes of finding materials for boat construction, ultimately gathering in the courtyard to construct their boats.

This year’s fleet seemed more colorful than most — the freshmen this year used duct tape ranging in color from pink to green to blue whereas prior classes used only grey duct tape.

The Class of 2022 also displayed their creativity when it came to naming their boats: Mr. King’s advisory named their boat “Lightning McKing” and Mr. Bass’s advisory named theirs “Bass Pro Shop.”

After a cookout lunch on the Quad, the freshmen shepherded their boats from under Saperstein Arch to the Johnson Center for three fleets of boat races in the pool and a subsequent awards ceremony commending students on design and practicality.

Ms. Clingen’s advisory took gold, Mr. Canterino’s advisory silver, and Dr. Robinson’s advisory bronze in the highly competitive yet jovial race.

As the first class to compete in the newly opened Johnson Center pool as opposed to the recently demolished Allen Pool, this year’s freshmen surely indulged in a day of fun and teamwork in what is arguably the most fun First Friday activity of all four grades in the Upper School.
