Sean Francis, English

Q: What made you come to Hackley?

A: Hackley looked like a great school, and I want to be part of a great school that’s very well run, where the students are actively involved in the school. Also, the area is great for me as well; my friends and family live here, so I moved back to be closer to them. Hackley’s very similar to the high school that I went to when I was young.

Q: What’s been your favorite part about teaching Hackley students in particular?

A: The conversations we’ve had in class are fantastic. I’m learning from my students, and hopefully they’re learning from me. We’ve been getting deeply involved with the issues that come up through our literature. So far the in-class interactions between myself and my students have been fantastic.

Q: What made you want to become a teacher?

A: The short answer is that I started teaching in my early thirties. I thought about being a teacher when I was in high school. I loved the academic setting, I love literature and the arts; that’s what I studied in high school, college, and grad school. I was unhappy with the first career I was involved in for 10 years, and I wanted to get into a career that I believed in more. Education is something I absolutely believe in, and I think it’s incredibly valuable for everybody. It’s more of what I wanted my life’s work to be: a part of helping kids gain their education through sharing my love of literature and the arts with them.
