Frauenthal Day Proclaimed in Westchester
October 8, 2014
Hackley students may know him as a math teacher who told them, “when I was eight, I tried chewing tobacco for the first time… and that was when I knew chewing tobacco was not for me.” Now, all of Westchester County will come to recognize former Hackley math teacher Stephen Frauenthal for his contributions to the community with the establishment of September 27th as “Stephen C. Frauenthal Day.”
Mr. Frauenthal is not only the engaging math teacher whom many Hackley students knew for 14 years, but also a community builder and leader. In honor of his accomplishments, Westchester County Officials have dedicated a day to him.
Mr. Frauenthal taught in Westchester for 53 years. Sophomore Isabella Ampil had the privilege of having him as a teacher last year, and described him as “dedicated, active, witty, tough as nails, a passionate storyteller, clever, and patient.”
However, there was much more to Mr. Frauenthal than his love for his collection of colored pencils and math and his chewing tobacco stories. He sat on the Board of Trustees of NYU Hospital for Joint Disease, is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Helene Fund of Nursing, and was a founding member of the Chief’s Fund, a program which raises money for children to go to summer camp who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so.
Mr. Frauenthal also worked as a conservationist and outdoor leader, serving as governor of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the leader of the Adirondack Winter Mountaineering School, and the director of Camp Lincoln.
Up on the Hilltop, Mr. Frauenthal’s former students and co-workers couldn’t be happier about Frauenthal Day. “I believe Mr. Frauenthal deserves not just this, but a national holiday in honor of him,” said sophomore Fernando Docters.
