Hackley Model UN Club hosts its first conference
June 13, 2017
The Model United Nations Club is bringing its conferences from abroad to the Hackley Campus, holding its first conference, HackMUN, on Saturday June 4. Model United Nations, or MUN, is a simulated version of the UN General Assembly or GA, which debates and passes resolutions regarding issues relevant to the international committee. Issues range from women’s equality to the threat of global warming. Each delegate represents a specific nation, and makes that nation’s opinions and interests heard in resolutions.
Concurrently, historical, or Joint Crisis Committees (JCC) face historical issues, such as the American Revolution or September 11 attacks, representing individuals of prominence from that time period, seeking to rewrite history. Their results may follow reality similarly, or divert on a wholly different path.
Hosted by, Juniors Christina Wang, Alex Wenstrup, and Connor Larson, the secretariat of the club, among a large array of staff, HackMUN will have 2 committees. One committee will be a GA and the other a JCC. The GA will debate the issue of cybersecurity, as it pertains to nations globally, ranging from minor threats such as computer worms to the massive data dumps, like Wikileaks.
The JCC will simulate the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1961, with one committee for the USA and another for the USSR. The two committees will try to resolve the heightened tensions of the Cuban Revolution and Cold War while averting the imminent threat of nuclear war.
Junior and club leader Connor Larson said, “Model UN builds invaluable skills in negotiating, public speaking, and diplomacy, and the HackMUN conference we’re hosting will provide a great opportunity within a supportive environment for anyone interested to get involved. ”
Prior to the actual committee, delegates are required to write a short position paper, which discusses the background of the issue at hand, and the delegates’ country or person’s opinions and interests for the outcome of the committee.
This conference is designed for novices, and welcomes both those with prior experience, and those who are doing MUN for the first time. The event will run from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m, and applications can be filled out and submitted at https://hackmun.org/.
