Block Blast, the popular puzzle game that’s captured the attention of students at Hackley and millions worldwide, combines strategy and relaxation, making it a favorite for players of all ages.

“I continued to play because it was calming and mindless, but I also like that it felt like there was kind of strategy at a certain point,” said junior Zion Bennett.

Block Blast is a puzzle game where players arrange Tetris-like pieces on a grid. The goal is to fill rows or columns completely to clear them, earning points along the way. While Block Blast was officially launched in late 2022, it gained booming popularity in 2024 with its addictive gameplay and frequent social media promotions.

BlockBlast has gained popularity among students here and around the world. The game has been featured in TikTok ads, prompting many to download the app and start playing. Created by Hungry Studio, Block Blast is categorized as both “block training” and “brain training.” What makes this game so much more appealing than classics like Tetris?

Block Blast has become a popular game within the Hackley School community. This is data from a survey taken by 106 students at Hackley School. This trend showcases its impact on students.

The game begins simply, with basic blocks that fit together effortlessly. As the game progresses, the blocks become more irregular in shape, challenging players to think strategically about placement. Unlike Tetris, where you’re under time pressure, Block Blast offers a stress-free experience with no time limit, making it perfect for casual play. This feature allows players to focus on strategy, adding a layer of depth while still offering a calming atmosphere.

“It’s one of those games that you pick up for a few minutes and suddenly realize you’ve been playing for an hour,” said junior Wyatt Belleville.

Block Blast has exceeded 40 million daily average users (DAU) and 160 million monthly average users (MAU) worldwide. According to Pocket Gamer, “Since its release on Android and iOS in 2021, the game has drawn over 200 million players globally. The growing community of players, especially among students, has contributed to its rising success.”

Beyond its addictive gameplay, Block Blast has gained players through its presence on TikTok, where influencers and players share tips, high scores, and challenges using trending hashtags. TikTok has not only expanded the game’s audience but also solidified its place as a cultural phenomenon among younger generations.

“I first started playing Block Blast because I saw it on TikTok, and all of my friends were talking about it,” said Zion.

The game’s design, which includes smooth animations and vibrant colors, enhances the experience. Players also enjoy the app’s frequent updates, which introduce new levels, challenges, and rewards and ensure the game stays fresh and engaging.

“The game is very calming. I like to play it between classes instead of scrolling on social media,” said freshman Jack Wilkins. Many students agree, and Block Blast is becoming a go-to game during study breaks or as a quick distraction between classes.

The app also offers helpful tips and tricks to help players advance further, ensuring that there’s always a new challenge ahead.

Whether playing during a break or competing for the highest score, Block Blast provides a perfect balance of fun and focus.
