This issue marks the end of the print edition of the Dial and will be the last magazine produced. In the future, the Dial will continue to publish articles online, along with more regular videos, podcasts, social media posts, and other forms of digital media.

The Dial was born in 1927 for the purpose of informing students about national news and events around campus. The name itself comes from the old sundial on the Quad. The first monthly editions focused on sports games, mostly football, and school events. The writers paid for the print copies by selling advertising space to businesses.

As the campus evolved, the Dial documented every change. In 1973, former writers covered the opening of Zetkov Gym, which was recently demolished, with the same attention and effort that current writers gave to the debut of the creation of the Center for Creative Arts and Technology. When political tensions surfaced, the Dial published opinion and news pieces that highlighted diverse perspectives and complex issues. Its print editions informed readers about campus developments and explored national events that captured student interest.

In the past, the Dial frequently published newspapers, and even with the creation of the website in 2013, the Dial continued to publish approximately seven newspapers each year. Over time, the Dial changed to a less frequently published magazine format to allow the staff to focus on the more digital aspects of the Dial with a growing website. Over the past few years, the Dial has been publishing one magazine each trimester to highlight the Dial’s best articles from the season, along with a monthly newsletter to its subscribers to showcase the online publication from that month.

While the print editions are going away, the Dial’s commitment to educating students never will. The Dial staff is excited for this change and hopes readers are, too.

Each member of leadership team shared some words about their experience on the Dial preceding the end of print:

“My time working for the Dial has been a fundamental part of my Hackley experience. I am so grateful for all of the different skills I’ve gained and the opportunities I’ve had working for the Dial. I’ve loved collaborating with the design editors on the magazine, and I will miss working with the leadership team and the entire Dial staff. I am so excited to see what this new chapter has in store for the Dial.” – Rebecca Ingles, Editor-in-Chief

“My time on the Dial has contributed greatly to my experience at Hackley over the last few years. I believe our platform, both online and print, has acted as one of the most unique ways to positively impact our community. Working with the Dial leadership team has allowed me to forge special relationships with like-minded peers and faculty. I’ve learned the depths and nuances of journalism and how impactful good quality journalism can be on a community. As the Dial moves onto a new chapter emphasizing online mediums, I’m excited to see the growth of the new team and The Dial as a whole.” – Sejal Virk, Editor-in-Chief

“Working on the Dial has been a life-changing experience. Over the years, I’ve gained valuable skills, meaningful experience, and – most importantly – lifelong friendships. Distributing the print magazine and seeing students engage with stories about their classmates and the world around them was something I once took for granted but now deeply cherish. I’m excited to see the Dial flourish in this new chapter and look forward to reading, watching, and listening to the voices of the next generation of Dial writers.” – Charlie Perlman, Editor-in-Chief

“Being a member of the Dial has been a transformative part of my Hackley experience. I learned how to effectively work with a team, write articles that resonate with my peers, and a lifetime of design skills I will continue to keep in my toolbox. Designing the magazines as Chief Design Editor challenged me to channel a creative side I didn’t know I had, and it was a rewarding process. Although I’m sad to see the magazine’s end, I can’t wait to see all the amazing ways the staff will continue to stay innovative with how they share news.” – Alessia Sorvillo, Chief Design Editor

“Throughout my time on the Dial, I have gained so many skills from creating and editing spreads on InDesign. While I am sad to hear that no one will be filling my role in the years to come, I look forward to hearing about all the new ways my peers will get creative.” – Giulia Sorvillo, Chief Design Editor

The Dial has been my home for the past 3 years, and I am so sad to leave it. I have learned so much about my peers, teachers, and Hackley’s history. I am so proud to see how the Dial and its staff have grown and improved during my time on the newspaper. I am so excited to see the Dial take on (and master) this feat of an entirely digital newspaper.” – Samantha Reyes, Managing Editor

“Over the past three years, I’ve realized how the Dial represented a place of academic freedom. Taking photos for events, interviewing individuals, and creating videos of events – it’s been a privilege to illuminate topics for the upper school body. As the newspaper continues to expand, I hope that more students will hear about this great opportunity in the student newspaper.” – Josh Lee, Managing Editor
