Along with new drama teacher, Mr. Teacher, senior Katie Mykrantz has taken on the task of starting Hackley’s new drama club. An active participant in both Hackley and out of school drama programs, Katie jumped at the chance to bring the drama club to the Upper School.
“I started the club because I feel like there’s a big community of people at Hackley that are into different aspects of performing, whether it be acting, dancing, singing or even the technology aspects,” said Katie. Along with Mr. Teacher and Head Performing Arts Director Mr. Nelson, Katie is working to get Hackley performing arts to be a bigger part of the Hackley community.
“We’re just hoping to have a lot of opportunities for students who want to perform to be able to,” said Katie. Without a drama club previously at Hackley, students who played sports or were involved in other extracurricular activities couldn’t get involved in Hackley showcases or short plays. The main purpose of starting the drama club this year was to give any Hackley student who has any interest in performing a place where they can all meet and talk about new ideas to provide every student in the club all the opportunities they want for performing. The new drama club will be independent from both the acting major and the fall play.
Both Katie and Mr. Teacher have high hopes for the new club and are welcoming as many new ideas as possible. “As of right now I’m just looking to see if any club members have cool ideas of their own,” said Katie.
When asked of any particular goal of the drama club’s this year, Katie said “To have the club perform a show or a short play at the Hackley Arts Festival or maybe even as a community service show in community service homes around the area.”
