From working with Hudson Scholars at Hackley to participating in internships and traveling to Scotland, Hackley students and faculty will embark on various exciting journeys this summer. Through these journeys, they will gain new perspectives and experiences that they will bring back with them to the 2025-2026 school year.
One of the most popular plans among students and faculty is participating in Hudson Scholars. Hudson Scholars is a three-week program where Hackley hosts students from the surrounding Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow area who come from lower-income households. As a part of the program, Hackley students become “mentors” for the scholars by guiding them through learning activities. Sophomore Owen Spencer will be a Hudson Scholars mentor. He has participated in the year-round program events, but this summer he will be a mentor for the first time.
“I am really excited to strengthen my bonds with the scholars and be able to lead my own club,” Owen said.
In addition to being a Hudson Scholars Mentor, Owen’s summer is jam-packed with pursuing four virtual internships around environmental justice and oral history, editing and publishing articles for an academic journal about world conflict, and hiking in the Adirondacks.
Sophomore Lily Hegener will also be participating in Hudson Scholars for her second summer. Additionally, she will work as a tennis instructor and continue working on her internship with NYU. She will also spend time at her house in Livingston Manor in upstate New York, catching up with her friends there.
Freshman Charlotte Frazier will spend most of her summer outside. She plans on attending many lacrosse camps and tournaments in addition to sailing.
“I love sailing during the summer, as I don’t have the chance to during the rest of the year. It’s a great way to get outside and spend time with my family and friends.” Charlotte said.
Upper School librarian, Ms. Jennifer Swan, will be embarking on multiple trips this summer. She will travel to Scotland with her husband as soon as the break starts. Then, later this summer, she will be visiting family and friends in South Carolina and Michigan.
“I’m really excited to go to Scotland this summer, as I have already been there, but my husband has not. I’m also really excited to catch up with family and friends, and especially going to South Carolina because there will be a pool as well.” Ms. Swan said.
After this summer, the journeys students and faculty will embark on will provide new perspectives and memories that can be shared with the Hackley community.
