Senior Stef Frolo’s many accomplishments as a varsity athlete include multiple state championships in both basketball and lacrosse. However, her biggest achievement to date may be her recent commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Binghamton University.
Excited to attend Binghamton and join its growing lacrosse program, Stef said, “I love the campus, the coach, and the girls on the team. The team is taking dramatic steps at improving the program and will hopefully be gaining some recognition soon enough.” Stef officially will sign with Binghamton between November 10th-15th.
However, Stef did not consider lacrosse as a part of her future until very recently. She first picked up a lacrosse stick at Hackley in 7th grade, but did not realize her potential until girls’ varsity lacrosse coaches Jenny Leffler and Melissa Stanek acknowledged that she possessed the skills to extend her lacrosse career beyond the high school level. “For a while Stef really saw lacrosse as her last sport,” Ms. Leffler said. “I think that I have always known she could play at the next level but she became a ‘lacrosse player’ at the end of her sophomore year.”
Stef does not feel her lack of experience is an obstacle. She said, “While lacrosse is the last sport I started playing, I feel that I can still improve so much and that I get better every day I play.”
Binghamton was not the only school that Stef considered attending. Despite being recruited to play lacrosse by Division III schools Trinity, Gettysburg, and Franklin & Marshall, Binghamton’s strong academic program played a large part in her decision. “I decided to go to Binghamton because I think that I want to go into business and they have a great business school,” she said.
Stef is confident in her abilities that she will take with her to Binghamton next fall. “When I go to Binghamton I definitely will bring my height, but more importantly my willingness to learn more about the game and to improve my skills,” she said.
Ms. Leffler is sure that Stef will succeed in college. “It’s this unreserved effort and true love of the game that really sets her apart,” she said.
While college is right around the corner, Stef is still focused on the upcoming season. After two consecutive league and state championships, Stef wants even more for the girls’ varsity lacrosse program. “I’d love to win another championship for the third year in a row,” she said.
Looking forward to her college career, Stef added, “I’m excited to meet a whole new team of girls, even though no one can ever compare to all the ladies on my Hackley team!”
