As a new school year approaches, fall fashion never seems to disappoint on the hilltop. The outfits appearing in the halls this season are easy to wear and definitely on trend. As exemplified by both boys and girls at Hackley, finding a way to stay on trend while staying in dresscode is without a doubt possible.

For the boys who want to look classy while staying in dresscode, a solid button down shirt complemented by a needlepoint belt with a pair of suede desert boots is always a good option. Sophomore Jack Weyndling wearing a blue and white checkered button down from Vineyard Vines with a tan pair of chinos and a classic pair of Sperrys said, “I enjoy shopping at Vineyard Vines, American Eagle, and J-Crew.”

Senior Kiegan Lenihan said that he likes to wear “pants and a belt with a polo or a white button down shirt with roll up sleeves.” He typically shops at AllSaints, Scotch and Soda or Ralph Lauren. As for male accessories, Senior Michael Arturi said, “I like to wear watches and scarves. They can really add to an outfit, and dress it up or down.”

For girls, floral print dresses and skirts are currently in season although they are mostly associated with the spring-time. This spring to fall must-have item is a great option for school because of the vibrant colors and exciting prints, as long as it’s no shorter than three inches above the knee and covers the shoulders! Senior Andrea McCree said, “Floral patterns are simple, girly, and definitely easy to wear.”

Freshman, Alex Hayward, was spotted on the hiltop wearing another emerging trend this season. Flannel shirts for girls are new this season and available in stores such as Forever 21, LF, and from the company Rail. Along with loving flannel shirts, as seen tied around her waist, Alex has spotted other new trends this fall. She said, “I just recently attended the LF season sale and shopped at Urban Outfitters. Some new trends I have noticed this fall are the choker necklaces and harem pants.”

When asked what she enjoys wearing during the fall season, junior, Ally Petitti said, “I love to wear fall colors during the season like greens and browns topped off with a cute leather jacket. When the weather is nice I’ll usually wear a flowery sundress with a cardigan. When I go shopping for school I mainly focus on stores such as Brandy Melville, Top Shop, and Aritzia.”

Slip-on sneakers have clearly become a popular trend in shoes this fall. They can be found with any print or in any color and go well with most outfits. For example, these shoes come in black quilted leather, blue, or even animal print. Slip-on sneakers can be found at a shoe stores such as Steve Madden, Vans, and Vince.

Many girls have been wearing a black choker necklace with a pearl bead in the center. This unique, new trend wraps high around the neck, and can be complemented with other necklaces that lay lower on the neck. This seemingly simple touch of a necklace can give a needed edge to any outfit. Staying on trend, Junior Elana Stern said, “I absolutely love my choker necklace, the pearl in the center is cute and simple, and it goes with almost all of my outfits.”

Flash Tats, which initially emerged towards the end of the summer, but are clearly carrying forward into the fall season are definitely becoming a fall trend to look out for. Flash Tats are tattoos that look surprisingly similar to jewelry and can be placed anywhere on the body, yet they are simply temporary tattoos that only need water to wear. These tattoos range from $20 to $30 and can last for up to six days intact. Senior, Andrea McCree, who wore a Flash Tat on her arm said, “Flash tats are a new, fun and cool trend for the summer and fall.”

Upper school director, Andrew King, along with many of the upper school teachers have decided to better enforce the restrictions of Hackley’s dress code. The biggest issue for boys is remembering to keep their shirts tucked in at all times throughout the school day as well as making sure not to wear hooded sweatshirts with large symbols that aren’t white, grey, or black. The changes for girls included the stricter policy against inappropriate skirt or dress lengths or uncovered shoulders. Breaking these rules have mostly resulted in a disciplinary detention or a trip to the administrative assistant to the upper school Director, Claudia Coy’s office. When deciding what to wear to school make sure it follows these restrictions. Fortunately, trends this season offer students many options for staying in dress code and on trend. To keep up with the latest trends or to find some inspiration and creativity in clothing choices Hackley students can always take a look at New York Fashion Week. This is a series of designer fashion shows with exciting new looks. While occasionally trends from the runway can be over the top and often too much for school, bits and pieces, such as fabrics and colors, can be taken and worn in everyday life. The trends this fall can vary from person to person so when thinking about what to wear, incorporate an individual flare into these fall fashions to make it unique.
