Sophomore David Jiang: a passionate tennis player, an avid skier, but above all, an expert pianist who has performed at Carnegie Hall.

David’s practice schedule is rigorous and diligent, as he practices two hours a day on weekdays and even more on weekends. Playing at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City is a lifelong dream of musicians all over the world.  Having been asked to do so at the age of 15, as David did last month, is extremely rare.  David now dreams of performing at the Sydney Opera House. David started playing the piano at the age of 5, and began playing competitively in 2008.

From David’s own personal experience, the advice he would offer to individuals aspiring to play piano, or another instrument at a competitive level, is to consider that “it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of time. The rewards can be incredible, but if you aren’t willing to make the sacrifices, then you won’t succeed,” he said.  In 2010, David participated in the NJMTA Young Musician Allstate Competition, and he disappointingly didn’t place. As a result, he became fiercely determined to earn a place the next year; he won 1st. That competition is the one that particularly stands out for David: “It was my first time placing first in a competition, and I attribute it to the extra practice and determination to improve,” he said.

David has several hobbies in addition to being an adept pianist. He thoroughly enjoys playing tennis and skiing, and also plays the saxophone.  He constructed an entire computer this summer, and given the chance, David would love to travel to the French Alps or the Great Barrier Reef.

When he seeks relaxation, he enjoys listening to Pink Floyd, Cream, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to name a few. If he could attend the concert of any musician, David would love to attend the concert of Vladimir Horowitz. His musical performer of choice to jam with would be “Franz Liszt – one of the few famous composers who was a nice person,” he stated.

David has only become this successful and skilled with the help of some valuable mentors. “Both of my parents have been extremely supportive, especially my mother. My teacher has also obviously been a major factor in my success,” David said.
