The tuxedos were sharp, the iconic Marilyn Monroe red lips were bold, and the classy fitted dresses were styled to perfection. On January 26, the annual Upper School Snowball dance was held in Allen Hall, which looked like a scene straight out of old Hollywood.
Community Council members arrived hours earlier to help decorate and set up, and their efforts did not go unnoticed. Each table had an Oscar award, black and gold balloons were up everywhere, dim lights set the perfect mood, the red carpet was rolled out for the photo booth, and in the center, the word “Hollywood” was spelled out in bold letters. The theme this year? Classic Hollywood— and classic Hollywood it was.
“I think people are scared to go to Snowball because it’s seen as ‘cringe,’ but honestly if you just go there and try to have fun, it’s an absolute blast,” said junior Nikhil Shah.
As usual, the dance was composed mainly of underclassmen. While Community Council members of all grades were obligated to attend, freshmen filled every corner of the dance floor. Following that was a sprinkle of sophomores, some coming and going, a few juniors, and some sentimental seniors enjoying their last Snowball. But regardless of each grade’s status, one thing was clear: everyone was enjoying themselves.
As with every Snowball, the night started off slow. The dance floor was more or less relaxed, and people were socializing more than anything. But as time passed, more people arrived, and the early 2000s hits took over. The classic freshman dance circle was formed with incredible moves, and the occasional worm dance move was spotlighted. The enthusiastic conga line made its way around the room, sophomore girls brought their energy to the dance floor, and group dances like the Macarena and Cotton Eye Joe had everyone out of their chairs.
Freshman Amity Doyle thanked the Community Council for such a fun dance with a great atmosphere as she described the dance as “magical.”Amity completely embraced the theme of the night, wearing her Marilyn Monroe-inspired pink dress with bold, glamorous makeup. “Everyone looked amazing, and the conga line was a lot of fun,” she said.
“Snowball has been something that I’ve looked forward to annually, and considering that it’s my last year at Hackley, I’m especially determined to soak everything in. There’s nothing like dancing to ‘Mr. Brightside’ until your feet hurt,” said senior Arri Posey.
