App of the Month: Duolingo

By Grace Henrich, Science and Technology Editor

Working to improve your grades in a language class? Travelling abroad and want to learn some of the native language? Or maybe you just want to pick up a new language for fun? If so, Duolingo is the app you have been waiting for.

The app has two paths: one for beginners and one for experienced linguists. If you have never spoken the language before, Duolingo starts out with the basics, such as simple, common vocabulary and verbs. If you have spoken the language before, the app asks you to take a quick placement test that determines how many of the beginning levels you can skip. Each lesson is a combination of translating, writing, and speaking, ensuring full understanding of the language. Interactive chats with a computer are also unlocked once you reach more advanced levels, helping language learners practice speaking spontaneously.

Duolingo’s success stems from its short lessons — daily sessions that last 5-20 minutes — and its game-like approach. App users lose hearts each time they make a mistake and cannot continue forward until they earn it back by practicing earlier lessons or by using gems that you earn as you complete levels. Those gems can also be utilized to buy additional fun lessons, like learning proverbs or how to flirt. Duolingo also tells its users their percent of fluency in a given language, in order to track their progress.

Duolingo is free in the App Store, Windows Store, Google Play, and on its website.
