Sophomore Class Presidential Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I love Hackley, I love my peers and my grade, and I love serving on Council. I bring determination and enthusiasm to every project I pursue, and I promise to do the same if I am elected Class President. In addition, I am lucky enough to have served on Council for the past two years, and I have learned a lot by observing how to get things done within the restrictions that are placed on students.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

I have represented Hackley at countless debate tournaments, and am currently serving as a Baraza group leader representing Hackley at the Young Round Square conference. In addition, I have served the Class of 2020 for the past two years as grade rep. I organized field trips to Bounce and Playland, met with Mr. Wirtz, Mr. King and other Hackley teachers and staff representing the interests of our grade. In addition, I enthusiastically volunteered for anything that was offered to me on Council, coming early and staying late at Snowball and the Haunted House to set up and clean up. I sold, sorted, and came early to school to deliver your candy grams, and was often the only one selling tickets for the golden parking spot even though I’m a freshman and I was selling to upperclassmen.

Finally, I wrote a petition which was signed by over 65 students in our grade to improve the Freshman hallway. I then had a series of meetings with Mr. Loomis and Mr. King which helped raise awareness of the terrible conditions in the Freshman hallway. This led to the leaking pipe getting fixed, having a new garbage can, and more electrical outlets that are safer not just in the Freshman Hallway, but in the Sophomore Bubble as well.

What are your goals if elected?

My first goal is to encourage a friendly, welcoming, and fun environment that promotes grade spirit. One idea that I believe would help bring our grade together is a Sophomore of the Month award, where we can nominate and vote for our peers for their contributions to the Hackley community. In addition, I believe that having merchandise specifically made for the Class of 2020 would also foster spirit and grade pride. Thirdly, I would introduce lip-synching or baking competitions judged not by the faculty, but by the students. And lastly, I would do my best to get more interesting prizes (such as pieing a teacher in the face) for those competitions so that regardless of who wins, we can all laugh.”

Sophomore Class Presidential Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I would be a good candidate for this position because I am passionate about serving the Class of 2020. I am friendly with a wide range of students, and I am comfortable talking to them about their ideas and concerns. If there is work to be done for the Community Council, I can be counted on to take the time to do it. I also have a ton of fake blood left from the haunted house that I need to use.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

This past year, I, as well as the rest of the freshman Community Council assembled a large group of our classmates to decorate and scare in our portion of the haunted house. Using communication and leadership skills, we helped to successfully pull off a new event. I also gave the speeches for the 4th and 8th grade graduations, and have maintained a leadership role throughout my time at Hackley.

What are your goals if elected?

If I am elected to this position, I would like to increase attendance to school events, not only those run by council, but also plays, sporting events and concerts. I also want to plan more grade-wide activities for students to enjoy like movie nights, game nights, and competitions.

Sophomore Class Presidential Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I believe that this year as a freshman has taught me a lot about problem solving, a lot about commitment, a lot about perseverance, and a lot about taking on a challenge. I don’t like to admit it but my grades at the beginning of the school year were not very good, at least for my standard. At the beginning of the second trimester I told myself what I needed to do to improve, and I did it. I met with teachers, I studied harder, and did everything I could to better myself as a student. It worked. I improved by two grade levels (B- to a B+, for example) in all three of the classes of which I did poorly in the first trimester while maintaining a satisfactory grade in the classes that I did do well in. I persevered and I improved. That kind of attitude is what I would apply to Community Council, if given the privilege next year. Identify what I need to do to achieve a goal and do everything I possibly can to achieve it. I personally believe that if a person applies that attitude to any aspect of their life, success is inevitable. I also believe that this attitude is what a person needs to be a dedicated class president. I can assure every one of my peers that I have that attitude and I can assure them that I am worthy for the responsibility that comes with being class president.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

As many students who attended Hackley last year may know, I was on community council in eighth grade. I helped organize events such as the Halloween movie night, the bounce trip before winter break, the spirit week, and the trip to Rye Playland Amusement Park at the end of the year to celebrate our graduation from the Middle School.

What are your goals if elected?

My main goal if given the privilege of class president is to create a grade wide atmosphere that can be described as new and improved. On the topic of new, I have many ideas that I believe can straighten friendships, create new ones, and most importantly build the community as a whole, all while being exceedingly enjoyable. These ideas include but are not limited to, a challenge night, an event where students can form groups, and compete in solving puzzles and challenges such as who can solve a rubik’s cube the fastest, who can build the tallest tower out of cards, who can stack blocks to create the highest structure, and who can stack cups the fastest, with the winners getting a prizes related to the event that they have won, a family feud event, where students can form groups of between three and six of their friends, and compete in a family feud tournament, with the winner possibly winning Hackley merchandise or even a dress down for their homeroom(s), and at the end of the year a camp out where students can watch a movie, roast marshmallows while chatting with friends and telling stories, and even, if possible, sleep over. These are just some of the new events I would like to introduce into the Hackley community next year. Also, I would like to improve upon preexisting events. One thing I noticed this year was that all the events were mostly activity based and there was not a setting in which students could just relax and chat. I remember when leaving Snowball this year seeing about thirty students by the front entrance just sitting on the floor because the music was too loud to talk in the main event and there was nowhere else for the students to go. This is why at events that are mostly activity based, like Snowball, I would like to introduce a place for students to go, to have a snack and just chat for a bit, and if they wish, go right back into the main event. Also, I would like to improve upon events that were done in the past, like the spirit week, and bounce. I think that the ugly sweater day done before winter break this year was great but I think a spirit week right before break would be better. One day people could come in dressed in spirit for the holidays where the next day people could come in to show their patriotic spirit, all while entering to win prizes for the best show of spirit for that particular day. Also, I would like to bring back Bounce, a trip that I considered to be very successful last year, but not at the right time of the year. For those that attended last year you may remember that it was done right before winter break, but I think it should be done right after the exams as a way to de-stress, have fun and to relax after the hours of studying that was done in the weeks prior. These are my goals if elected next year, to introduce new and improved events that strengthen friendships, create new ones, build community, and are still greatly enjoyable.

Sophomore Class Representative Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I feel that I am a good candidate for our sophomore class representative because I am willing to put in the time and effort to make our year successful. I will be willing to listen to all of your requests and try my best to follow through on them and make sure they happen. As a class representative, you need to be open to ideas and working with others even if you have differing views or have not worked together in the past and I feel that I will be able to encourage unity and cooperation. In addition, I am very determined and if I make a promise, I will attempt, in all my power, to see that it is done.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

Although it has only been my first year at Hackley, I have played tennis, basketball, and have run track. In addition, I am a student ambassador and I have helped with Open House, student visits, and leading tours.

What are your goals if elected?

If I am elected, I will work towards making our sophomore year memorable. A big part of Hackley is the idea that we are called “to be and find a friend.” I want to have our grade involved more in encouraging other members of our school whether they involved in sports, plays, or concerts. In addition, I want to have more events throughout the year as well help develop any existing events such as the advisory fashion show or Snowball make them even more fun for the Hackley community.

Sophomore Class Representative Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I feel that my diverse interests and school activities would give me the insight necessary to be an effective class representative. I have made it a personal goal to meet more people and understand what they want out of Hackley in order to gain an understanding of what would be best for the grade as a whole.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

I became a part of the orchestra since the 3rd grade, and I started taking private lessons in the fifth grade so that I could be more useful to the orchestra. I’m going to try to volunteer over the summer for some Hackley programs, and I’ve already been made captain of the Fencing team.

What are your goals if elected?

My goals are to marks the activities serve the needs and desires of the students, rather than going along with some formula as it seems to right now. What Hackley does currently is try to reach out to the students in a way that comes off as either invasive or overly formal. Meetings serve an important role in our community as it informs our students, but then there’s nothing to be said then we shouldn’t substitute the useful information with useless discussions. The meetings are an important part of this school and shouldn’t become pointless formalities. I also feel that it’s important for the students to socialize as social skills are very important for making a living in the adult world. However, this interaction doesn’t have to be forced, or it won’t have the same effect. All that needs to happen is for students to have enough time to socialize on their own. Hackley needs to be a school that guides its students but gives them enough breathing room to make some significant decisions of their own so they might learn not only academics, but also to think for themselves.

Sophomore Class Representative Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I think I would be a good candidate for the position for various reasons. This year, I was a committed 9th grade representative, and a have found a passion in being a leader of my community, and taking action if necessary.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

I have been at Hackley since Kindergarten, and I know what is necessary to improve our community. I am very passionate about work that involves taking a stand and leading a body of people.

What are your goals if elected?

As a mentioned in the previous question, I was on Community Council this year, and I have worked hard to create and plan activities for our grade. I am also an Ambassador, so Council is a great way to showcase my leadership skills. If elected, my goal is to make the high school experience better for each student that is a part of the Class of 2020. I also want to arrange activities that will bring students together and that will also be memorable and fun.

Name: Taylor Robin

Sophomore Class Representative Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I think I would be a good candidate because I think I have built close ties to the community. I have also attempted to involve myself with many clubs in the school to support others. I also feel I would be a good candidate because I am extremely passionate about everything that I do and care about, council being one of them. Not only that, but I absolutely love helping people. Every chance I get, I take the opportunity to help other whether that may be as simple as helping someone with their homework, or giving someone advice if they are having a tough time. I take my position very seriously and not only just use it to make announcements about upcoming council events, but also talk to my peers about real world problems or even just the problems that ensue within our grade. I was also class president this year I believe my experience would be of good use within the council. For these reasons, I believe I would be a good candidate for class representative.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

I have involved myself in a number of clubs and groups in the Hackley community to offer my help and support within them. For instance, I am an ambassador, UNITY officer, part or the feminism club, and have just tried to act as a helping hand or support system within my grade. I also created the idea of creating a class mural in the freshman hallway to not only brighten up the hallway but to bring that grade together to participate in something to help each other. This year, I also launched a drive for hack gives back where I collected books and school supplies for kids in Dominica whose school flooded a year ago. While this project was not necessarily for the Hackley students, it was a chance for the students to involve themselves in something that is bigger than them and could help other so in that sense I feel that that contributed to the Hackley community.

What are your goals if elected?

My goals are to continue to build a close-knit community within my grade, as well as make this position a partnership between the community and I, to ensure that people’s voices are heard. I also plan on trying to bring back chopped.

Name: Neil Singh

Sophomore Class Representative Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

Next year will be my 11th year on the Hilltop, and I know Hackley inside and out. I feel like I am able to connect with all the students in our grade, including debaters, actors, artists, athletes, and faculty. During my time at Hackley, I have participated in plays, performances, games, and extensive interactions with faculty and students. I am able to work with anybody else on council, and I can bring a fresh perspective into the weekly Tuesday night meetings.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

Throughout my 10 years at Hackley, I have participated in theatre, chorus, band, art, debate, sports and many other activities on campus. I often spend my weekend at Hackley helping middle school debaters, and I spend time after school helping lower schoolers with their homework.

What are your goals if elected?

If elected as Class Representative, my main goal is to increase council’s budget, and find the cheapest ways to organize fun and interactive activities. When speaking to current council members, they often echo the sentiment that council does not have enough money to organize multiple activities. My ideas include raffles that are open to the entire high school and possibly even Middle Schoolers, monthly bake sales, and the sale of Hackley accessories such as computer stickers. I would like to create a relationship between council and the Hackley Parents’ Association, that will allow us to create raffles for Hornets’ Nest items and tuck discounts. If I am able to increase the budget, it makes all the ideas that other people present somewhat feasible and possible. Next, I would like our sophomore class next year to take a trip at some point in the year together, such as six flags, play land, or anywhere else. I want to use our increased budget to create a sting-like atmosphere at all events, including carnival games and our delicious Flik burgers and hot dogs (ice cream too!)
