Comedy of Errors blends Shakespeare and Hip Hop

By Lei Anne Rabeje, Editor-in-Chief

The Upper School Drama Department pulled off yet another showstopper with its fall production of The Comedy of Errors. The play aired over two weekends, Friday 11/3, Saturday 11/4, Friday 11/10, and Saturday, 11/11. The production took inspiration from Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Broadway hit, Hamilton, and added a twist of hip hop to the Shakespeare classic. In his “Director’s Notes,” Director Willie Teacher said that the production “blended together two of [his] favorite things, chocolate and peanut butter NO! Shakespeare and Hip Hop.” Each scene was broken with a hip hop classic, like Jesus Walks, and brought a sense of intrigue and nostalgia to the crowd as they awaited the next scene.

Junior Rahat Mahbub took the show in his role as Courtesan. Even with a minor role, the audience’s laughter echoed through the PAC as he strutted on stage decked in heels and a 1920s flapper dress. The red dress, combined with the red stage lighting, was truly a sight.
