The Hackley community reunited once again on Akin Common for Convocation, an annual tradition that inspires students and faculty to start the year off on the right foot.
The K-12 event opened with Hackley’s acapella group singing a rendition of the Alma Mater followed by remarks from Associate Head of School Dr. Cyndy Jean, who introduced student body president EJ Regalado.
During her speech, EJ recounted her own experience as a younger student attending Convocation, reminding the community to encourage kindness and always ask for help. “This school year, supporting each other is the best thing that we can do for ourselves and for our community,” she said.
To welcome the new Head of School, Charles Franklin, to the Hilltop, Board of Trustees President Dr. Harvinder Sandhu emphasized his excitement for the year ahead. Dr. Sandhu spoke for the Board as a whole, describing the selectivity and care that went into choosing a Head of School that would be a perfect fit for Hackley and the community’s future goals.
Then, having just returned to the Hilltop after a week-long bout of COVID, Mr. Franklin addressed the schoolwide community for the first time, expressing his enthusiasm for getting to know individual students and learning more about the campus. Mr. Franklin also emphasized his gratitude for teachers, staff, the Board of Trustees, and especially the students. He recognized the accomplishments of Hackley’s Class of 2024, asking seniors to rise for a round of applause.
“Based on Mr. Franklin’s speech, he seems incredibly enthusiastic for the year ahead and I am excited to get to know him better before graduation,” said senior Sarah Metcalfe.
Harkening back to school mottos and traditions, Convocation came to a close with a spirited “Go Hack!” from the entire community.
