This spring break has the potential to be unforgettable without even leaving the area. Although some students travel over spring break, local activities and trips as close as fifteen minutes from Tarrytown can be surprisingly fun. Whether a student prefers adventurous activities, such as skiing and bouncing, or is looking for a more relaxing break filled with theatre and shopping, there are options nearby for everyone.

Most students live around 40 minutes away from New York City. If home over spring break or a long weekend, a great way to spend the day would be to see a Broadway show. Shows that have recently received a significant amount of attention include: The Book of Mormon, The Lion King, Wicked, Pippin, Rock of Ages, and many others. These award winning shows are currently featured on Broadway in the top 10 most popular. These shows include both musicals, with great music, singing, and acting, as well as plays with unforgettable actors and a ton of humor. Freshman Teddy Van Eck saw Wicked and said, “It was amazing. The music was really good and everyone I went with loved it.”

Shopping over break never fails to disappoint many students. Tarrytown is just about 40 minutes away from Woodbury Common, an outlet mall. This premium outlet has items ranging from shoes, to home furnishings. A wide variety of designers are also available such as, Adidas, Lululemon, BCBG Max Azria, J.Crew, Vineyard Vines, and many others. Other than brand specific stores, this outlet also contains department stores such as Barney’s New York and Sak’s Fifth Avenue. Sophomore Ally Petitti said, “I would definitely recommend Woodbury Common to anyone, they have something for everyone, not to mention the great food court.”

Combined with great clothes, Woodbury Common’s prices are usually lowered because it is an outlet. This means it contains a lot of last season’s clothes that are often available at almost half price.

The more adventurous type might opt out of going shopping, but instead be intrigued by a close ski trip. Windham Mountain Resort is just two hours away from Hackley School, and is a great opportunity to enjoy the slopes without traveling too far. Tickets go for as low as forty-nine dollars for a young adult, and the price increases depending on the duration the skier wishes to stay. Private lessons along with group classes are also offered. Sophomore skier Nick Gutfleish said, “I love going up there, it’s easy to get to because it’s so close, and the skiing is great.”

Besides skiing, Windham offers a resort to stay in, rental equipment, a spa, and yoga. Although skiing is dependent on the weather, specifically the amount of snow on the runs, it looks likely that due to the recent amount of snow, Windham will be in good conditions over break.

A popular destination among students is Bounce. Bounce, located just 15 minutes from Hackley School in Rockland County, offers activities such as jumping, training, working out, and indoor sports. The trampolines at Bounce are what they are best known for. Whether the participant is able to do a double back flip, or just wants to jump, it’s fun either way. Senior Katie Mykrantz said, “It was a great experience and a lot of fun, but the only downside was that the majority of the people there were significantly younger than us.”

Although Bounce does have a large appeal to younger kids, Upper School students find themselves having a great time.

Make sure to check out these great weekend trips, especially with spring break just around the corner. Activities that appeal to all different people are surprisingly close to home, and always make for a good time.
