Summer Concerts, Festivals and Galleries

The summer of 2014 is filled with lots of concerts, music festivals, and galleries to go to, all close by. Here are some of the nearby events to check out this summer.

The single concerts for the summer in the New York City and Westchester area include India Menzel on June 16th at the Radio City Musical Hall. Madison Square Garden will be hosting Katy Perry on July 9th, Bruno Mars on July 14th and 15th, and Queen and Adam Lambert on July 17th. Sara Bareilles will be performing on July 19th and 20th at the Theater at MSG, on August 5th Panic! At the Disco will also be performing at The Theater at MSG.

The Music Festivals close to the area of this summer include the Hudson Project, the Governors Ball, Firefly, and Warped Tour. The Hudson Project starts July 11th and ends July 13th in Saugerties, New York. The Festival is an average drive of a hour and a half drive from Tarrytown, New York. This festival is only open to people who are 18 years old or older. It has over 85 acts that are scheduled to perform, some of them including: Kendrick Lamar, Capital City, ZZ Ward, Modest Mouse, Dr Dog, and Matt & Kim.

The Governors Ball takes place in Randall’s Island, New York from June 6th to June 8th. It is about a 3o minute to 40 minute drive from Tarrytown, New York. More than 65 acts are scheduled to perform including: Childish Gambino, Vampire Weekend, The 1975, The Strokes, Bastille, Janelle Monae, Phoenix, and Skrillex.

Firefly Music Festival is from June 9th to June 22nd in Dover, Delaware, an average of a three hour drive from Tarrytown, New York. People under 18 must attend with someone 18 years old or older. This Music Festival not only has music, but farmer’s markets, premiere camping, yago, food trucks, and live entertainment. Some of the artists of the over 120 acts scheduled to play include: Foo Fighters, Outkast, Imagine Dragons, The Lumineers, Childish Gambino, Arctic Monkeys. Tegan and Sarah, and Beck.

The Warped Tour is a nation tour, the closest concert is in Long Island, NY Nikon at Jones Beach Amphitheater, on July 12th. This is the Warped Tour’s 20th anniversary; there are 121 bands participating in total for the tour. Some of these bands that will be performing in Long Island will be: The Maine, Breathe Carolina, Mayday Parade, We Are The In Crowd, We The Kings, The Ready Set, and Of Mice and Men.

For art exhibits close by, the MoMa and the Met offer a myriad of interesting showcases.

At the Met:

“The Pre-Raphaelite Legacy: British Art and Design” from May 20th to October 26th is artwork from the second half of the 19th century, showing the creative vision of the time period.

Charles James: Beyond Fashion from May 8th to August 10th is a collection of newly modernized Costume Institution looking at the career of Charles James (1906-1978)

Lost Kingdoms Hindu-Buddhist Sculpture of Early Southeast Asia, 5th to 8th Century from April 15th to July 27th. This gallery is the first loan exhibition of the sculpture art of the earliest kingdoms of Southeast Asia. The exhibition shows the cultures from Pyu, Funan, Zhenla, and more.

At the MoMa:

Sites of Reason: A selection of Recent Acquisitions. This exhibition, taking place from June 11th – September 28th. is an adaption of “the sight of reason” a line in Gertrude Stein’s work Tender Buttons (1914)

Alibis: Sigmar Polke 1963-2010 from April 19th to August 3rd explores Polke’s works of photography, film, painting, drawing, prints, and sculptures.

Lygia Clark: The Abandonment of Art, 1948-1988 from May 10th to August 24th is the first comprehensive exhibition in North America of Lygia Clark’s work. The exhibition shows a major retrospective of Lygia Clark’s artwork.
