One Love is a national non-profit organization with the goal of ending relationship abuse. The Hackley chapter of the One Love club was founded last year by current senior Annabel Hardart in hopes of sharing the foundation’s message.
One Love was created after Yeardley Love, a student and lacrosse player at the University of Virginia was murdered by her boyfriend. She was murdered on May 10th 2010 in her apartment. Yeardleys mom Sharon and her sister Lexie founded the club in order to spread awareness.
The girls lacrosse team made merch with all proceeds going to One Love. Juniors Annabel Hardart and Alex Schiller show off the new sweatshirts.
“I first found out about one love at a lacrosse camp in Bronxville in 7th grade, Senior Daanya Mir said, “If it weren’t for me playing lacrosse, I don’t think I would be as informed on domestic violence and Yeardley Love’s story.”
The club’s name comes from Yeardley’s last name and the one represents the number of her jersey.
Dedication games are a way for One Love to spread awareness. Girls Lacrosse held their first dedication game against Fieldston last spring. The game fell on the 13th anniversary of Yeardley’s death.
Daanya has been on the team since her freshman year and was excited to join the club last year. She joined because she wanted to help spread One Love’s message farther than just lacrosse players. “It is incredibly important and valuable, especially to impressionable teenagers,” she said.
Last year the club met once a cycle on Day 7 during lunch in order to talk about ways to get the entire school involved. Members came up with ideas including teaching the middle school and doing dedication games. This year the club is hoping to do more dedication games with different sports and get the community more involved. The club is planning on meeting spontaneously throughout the year in order to try and grow the club.
One Love is always looking for new members and the club leaders are excited for the club to grow in the future.
