Every year Girls Varsity Soccer kicks off Alumni Weekend with the Dave Allison game, honoring a former teacher and coach who passed away due to breast cancer. The game is played under the lights on Pickert Field with the team wearing their pink jerseys in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
During the team’s pregame meeting Melissa Stanek, History teacher and 10th grade dean, who played soccer for Dave Allison, talked to the girls to inspire them. She talked about how Dave Allison was the first person to make her feel comfortable at Hackley and how he fought for girls to be treated with respect in sports. She said, “Mr. A taught me to always play my best, with heart, and for my teammates.”
The girls faced Horace Mann under the lights on Pickert Field. After a hard-fought match in rainy conditions, the team lost 3-0.
On Saturday, the weekend continued with Varsity Field Hockey kicking off the day by playing Horace Mann at 2:30 p.m. It was also their senior game and the girls won 2-1 securing the title of Ivy League Champs. The goals were scored by Juniors Devyn O’Callaghan and Elizabeth Doherty.
Boys Varsity Soccer played Rye Country Day at 2:45 p.m., losing 1-0.
Boys football ended the weekend playing Fieldston, with the game starting at 3:00p.m.. The boys won 10-6, securing a first-round bye and a home playoff game in the NYSAIS Tournament.
