This year, the Hackley Community Council has undergone many changes from roster to director, even to titles and offices. More than half of the Community Council roster was not on Council last year. On top of that, Council’s old director Ms. Bowers is no longer Hackley faculty, making way for Council’s new director, Mr. Arnold. Even Council’s positional system is different as the School-Wide officers from the 2012-2013 Council modeled a new one within each grade, and created a new position, Class Agent. With all of these changes, the Hackley student body doesn’t know how truly unique this year’s Community Council is.

Students know Council’s Secretary of Treasury, Jeremy Anderson, in fact the majority of students voted for him. As Secretary of Treasury, Jeremy has the job of “taking notes about what occurs at each meeting” as he put it. What Jeremy said he finds especially unique about his position is his duty of “allocating funds.” He says that “whether it’s sponsoring club events or reimbursing a council member, I deal with the money.” Jeremy’s role on Council puts him in a position to really cause change, which is what he plans to do. Jeremy said that he “hopes to make it more clear to the student body how the money is being spent,” and that he wants students to “have more of a say in the spending of Council’s funds.” What students often overlook about Jeremy’s role on Council is that Jeremy is only a Junior, yet he fills a position typically held by a Senior, which is really displays his effort and passion for Hackley’s Community Council.

Members of the Board of Magistrates have a very important position on council. This board, however, is not always apparent as a major part of council because the students do not vote for these members. The active community council elects members for the Board of Magistrates prior to that year’s election, making it the only position on council not voted for by the student body. Regardless of the election process, the Board of Magistrates has a crucial role on council, and a crucial role in the well being of students. What many students don’t know is that the board of magistrates is primarily a disciplinary committee. As Senior Board of Magistrates Alternate put it, “our job is to assist Mr. Johnson in disciplinary decisions, excluding expulsions.” Although a relatively unknown branch of Community Council, the Board of Magistrates serves a pivotal role in the proceedings of Council.

Lastly, the 2012-2013 School-Wide officers developed a new position in each grade, Class Agent. Class Agent is a very unique position on council, as it has no fixed role or responsibility. Its role, in fact, is to have many roles. Mr. Arnold explained that, “since last year’s council cut some positions, the implementing of the Class Agent serves as another, and more direct, way for the students to be connected to Council.” He also said that the position is, “an important one as it serves a universal purpose on Council, and the Class Agent may fulfill any job needed.” The members of Community Council certainly hope that the new position of Class Agent serves the students well, and proves to be a great addition to the new and ever-improving Hackley Community Council.
