Hack Hackley Prom 2017

By Amy Chalan and Natalie Sukhman

Prom: a legendary night in the beginning of June where juniors and seniors get dressed up in beautiful dresses and tuxedos to dance the night away with their classmates. Because getting glammed up for school dances can break the bank and be overwhelming at times, these hacks will help you have an incredible prom night.

1. Rent a dress

Rent-The-Runway offers a more affordable alternative to acquiring the prom staples. If you’re looking for an affordable yet sophisticated look including a dress, bag, and accessories, Rent-the-Runway offers designer dress rentals. They have two locations in downtown New York City and can be accessed online.

2. Participate in Operation Prom

Operation Prom, a nonprofit organization, asks for dresses, jewelry, and handbag donations that are given to low income high school students unable to pay for prom attire. If you decide to purchase a dress and don’t plan on wearing it again, consider donating it!

3. Order a corsage online

If you’re looking for an inexpensive corsage, you can visit your local flower shop or order online. Check out Teleflora, an online flower shop, that delivers corsages on the same day and offers multiple inexpensive color options.

4. Rent a tuxedo

Promguy is an online store that offers designer tuxedos for rental. They offer multiple style and color options to match your date, as well as delivery a week before the event to ensure a perfect fit.

5. Carry an emergency kit

Carry a Minimergency kit in your purse. Kits for him and for her are compact cubes containing essentials for any emergency. The starting price is at $18 and there are multiple kit options. The kits include safety pins, Advil, buttons, mints, fashion tape, and much more.

6. Plan ahead of time

Make a prom planning timeline. Utilize Google Docs and create a schedule 2 weeks before prom to keep track of your hair, nail, and makeup appointments.

7. Take advantage of discounts with your student ID

Use your school ID to get discounts at food and clothing stores before and during the night of prom. The Dial has compiled a list of retailers who offer discounts to student IDs.

8. Carpool to Pre-Prom

Help the environment and don’t waste money on gas. Drive to pre-prom with your friends and pump some tunes! Don’t forget to drive safely!
