Every October, the Hackley Girls’ Varsity Soccer team (HGVS) dedicates a special game to honor Mr. Dave Allison, a former Hackley teacher and coach. The Dave Allison Game takes place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The memorial game was established 17 years ago. HGVS proudly represents this cause by wearing pink jerseys
Mr. Allison, who passed away after a battle with cancer, is deeply honored by his players and students. They speak highly of his passion for athletics and the impact he had on them. Melissa Stanek, Upper school history teacher, junior class dean, and Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse coach, played under Coach Allison and recalled his enthusiasm, sharing one of his memorable cheers: “What’s the word? Animal!”
Stanek shared her thoughts about him as a coach, offering personal stories that showcase his dedication and enthusiasm, especially for female sports. Before each game, Ms. Stanek gives the Girls’ Varsity Soccer team a heartfelt pre-game speech, reminding them of Mr. Allison’s spirit and passion for the game. Her pep talk serves as inspiration, motivating the team to play in his honor.
Ms. Stanek’s words touched senior captain Brooke Koffler.
“Ms. Stanek’s speech before the game is really motivational and makes me want to go out there and win for Mr. Allison,” Brooke said.
At each Dave Allison Game, Hackley and HGVS alumni reflect on Mr. Allison’s positive impact on their lives, both on and off the field. This tradition keeps his memory alive and highlights his lasting influence on his players.
Last year Meg Cimino ’83 gave the speech at the Dave Allison Memorial Soccer Game. This year Haleh Tavakol ’84, a former Hackley employee and a parent of two Hackley graduates from the class of 2017, will speak about her former coach.
This year, the Dave Allison Game will be held on Friday, October 18th, at 6:30 p.m. on Pickert Field. HGVS is excited to take the field, not just to compete, but to honor and remember Mr. Allison’s lasting legacy.
