The denim skirt is the newest hot commodity. Within the past year, its popularity has risen significantly on the Hilltop. It’s incredibly likely that when walking the hallways, you will spot someone wearing one. Why are people so drawn to wearing jean skirts? How has its popularity influenced specific outfits?
Durability and Dependability:
A main draw to the jean skirt is its dependability and durability. Its denim fabric and range of colors make it versatile, allowing for many outfit combinations with the same skirt. The skirt first gained popularity in the 1970s when it arose as a piece of clothing that reflected the loose and carefree vibe of the decade.
In the 1990s, various celebrities, such as Gwen Stefani and Courtney Love, wore the skirt, causing it to gain popularity. In the 2000s, many fashion designers transformed the skirt into a fashion statement. A consistent theme throughout these eras was that the skirt’s color, style, and function never changed.
“I really like how jean skirts are an in-between and can go with everything,” said sophomore Kate Masters. Its effortless and classic look has allowed people to express themselves and their personal style through multiple decades.
“I think they are a great option for school because they are cute, comfortable, and look nicer than jean shorts,” sophomore Ella Ferrari said. Jean skirts are seen as a happy medium between jean shorts and jeans, which makes them so appealing to wear for many members on the hilltop.
Popularity:
During the first weeks of school, the jean skirt could be seen constantly throughout the hallways. Beyond Hackley, on various social media platforms, famous style content creators post videos on how to style jean skirts. Incredibly dependable and stylish, its trendiness has made it so popular that it is a staple in the wardrobes of many.
“I don’t really mind how everyone is wearing them because there are so many variations of the skirt,” Ella said. The various prints and styles available allow people to put their own twist on the denim skirt. Its popularity isn’t just apparent on the hilltop, according to the CEO of Levi Strauss Co., Michelle Gass, the sales of jean skirts have doubled in the past three months. This wasn’t the case a year ago when denim skirt sales tended to be more moderate.
The rise of the denim skirt has not only caused its popularity on social media but also because pop culture icons and celebrities like Beyoncé have been bringing back country style into the fashion world. Beyoncé has promoted this style most notably through her newest album, “Cowboy Carter.” The influence of pop culture has caused this piece of clothing to resuscitate its popularity on the global market.
Though the jean skirts’ popularity is apparent on the Hilltop, it extends far beyond Hackley. The various styles and ability to put one’s personal touch on it have caused it to continuously have an unwavering amount of wearers everywhere.
