Name: Ben Moskow

Junior Class Presidential Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I believe I have what it takes to be a good Class President. I have participated in many performing arts productions and as a result, I am very comfortable with public speaking. I can use this quality both when presenting ideas on Council and when communicating with the grade. With my creativity, I can write and deliver announcements that will grade excited about school events. I’m also open to others’ ideas and will do my best to reach out and listen to them. I am very approachable and and get along with the majority of people I meet. From my experience in the performing arts, I have learned the importance of being able to work as a team to achieve a common goal. In addition, when I set my mind to something, very little can stop me from getting it done. From example, freshman year on the Track team I set the goal of a five-minute twenty-send mile and in the last meet of the season, I hit that mark. I am extremely dedicated to this school and if elected, I will do everything to make sure the Class of 2018 has a spectacular junior year.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

I am a member of the Student Ambassador Program. I’ve been a dedicated member of Cross Country team for the past two seasons, as well as being on the Track team freshman year. I took on a leadership role this past year in the brand-new male acapella group, and we had an excellent first year. With a few others, I have founded UFC, a frisbee club which has been steadily increasing in popularity, something I am to continue next year.

What are your goals if elected?

If elected, I’d like to take steps towards making the Hackley school day less stressful, as it is for many students. These ideas include, but are not limited to: making the massage chairs from the Hackley Stress Down Day available more often, setting up more phone chargers in the Upper School Office, and promoting the Frisbee Club as a fun, low-commitment club to relieve students of stress. I would also like to talk with the student body about ways to increase attendance at events that don’t get as much hype as they should, such as tennis matches, school plays and cross country meets. In addition, I’d like to inform the grade about what’s going on in Council meetings, perhaps with updates at Lindsay Room meetings.

Junior Class Presidential Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

In my grade, I take pride in being a friend to everyone. Not only do I include others in everything from school projects to activities outside the classroom such as clubs and sports, but I recognize the importance of listening to and taking into consideration the opinions of my peers. I am a strong person who is not afraid to stand up and fight for something I believe in. In my grade, I would be able to represent everyone, because I am not in a clique/small friend group and I am able to connect with everyone. I am always striking up conversations with my classmates when I see them in the hallway, regardless of if I am in a class with them or not. I am extremely supportive of other people and respect the opinions of others whether I agree with them or not. I am an adventurous person and like to take risks, trying things that haven’t been done before, and stepping out of my comfort zone. As President, I would be able to incorporate new things into the grade that haven’t been thought of yet by Council. I do not have a very busy schedule and I would be able to dedicate extra time to my grade and activities being planned in council. I usually stay late at school for dinner, so Tuesday night Council meetings would be easy for me to attend. I take pride in being a Hackley student and cherish the close-knit Hackley community. I want to give back to my grade and let their opinions and voices be heard so they can be as happy and supportive of their grade as I am.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

I have participated in many events in the Hackley community, such as Open House, clubs such as Unity and the Feminist Club, as well as contributed lots of excitement and spirit at sporting events and performances. I am part of the art program and help other students with projects when I finish my work early. I participate in all my classes and try to get conversation flowing, but I also step back once in awhile and let others take charge and speak their minds. I have tried to make the Hackley community friendlier by reaching out to everyone in my grade, as well as students in other grades, and faculty and by making them feel comfortable.

What are your goals if elected?

If I was to be elected, I would really stress bonding as a grade. I would like to come up with activities for the grade to participate in monthly, such as scavenger hunts, relay races, pool parties at the end of the year, a “Chopped” themed event, bowling parties, grade talent shows, a gala, and rap battles. As well as coming up with my own ideas, I would like to actively ask my peers to participate by sending me their ideas, as well as sending out surveys asking my peers to vote on what events they would enjoy the most, making sure that everyone’s opinions were represented.

Junior Class Presidential Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I’ve served as the Class President of my grade for 9th and 10th grade and I believe I have the experience to help my classmates succeed for arguably our hardest year at Hackley, 11th grade. I believe that over the last two years as president, the other class representatives and I have done a great job at keeping our grade informed and up to date on school wide events while organizing as many fun and interesting activities for the community as possible. I’ve also been at Hackley since kindergarten, and I know I have the ability to lead a large group of people throughout this campus. I can also fulfill the needs of my classmates as proven in the past, leading for another successful year for our class next year.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

By being on Council for the past two years, I’ve been a part of numerous school-wide activities while also attending as many sporting events and community-based functions as possible. I also keep students up to date on Hackley events in our newspaper, The Dial.

What are your goals if elected?

As Junior Class President, I want students in our class to be more engaged in the community and feel like they can ask me or suggest to me virtually anything. I want to continue to keep our grade informed in our grade-wide Facebook group, while also taking into consideration everyone’s suggestions on events, activities, and anything community council-related to the best of my ability.

Name: Michael Mezzacappa

Junior Class Representative Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I have attended Hackley since Kindergarten so I have a lot of experience at the school. I am familiar with the entire grade, many upper and under classmen, the faculty, and am willing to work with potential new students. I am part of the Varsity Football and Lacrosse programs, I have been an ambassador since Middle School, and I am currently on Community Council as a Grade Rep. Because of the variety of groups I am a part of, I believe I am well suited to take on the job again for next year.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

I have been a reliable leader in the Ambassador program who never fails to miss out on tours and open house events. I attend every council meeting to try and contribute the most to each one. I also attended a selective diversity Conference representing Hackley to spread awareness of diversity among other students.

What are your goals if elected?

I intend on planning more elaborate and well funded concessions for games and events after games or plays for the students such as bonfires, sports tournaments, etc. I want to use the space of the Campus more than we do normally by integrating our Community Time periods into outdoor time to use for different trail explorations or simply enjoying the Quad and turf fields.

Name: Georgia Panitz

Junior Class Representative Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

I think I would be a good candidate for Class Representative because I have been a member of Upper School Community Council for the past two years, but not only have I gone to meetings and simply been present, but I have been an active member of Council by presenting new ideas for events, pressing for improvements, and actively helping with snowball, candy grams, and concession stands. I understand how Council works and what needs to be done in order to plan events so that they are successful and appeal to as many students as possible. I have seen what things work and don’t work, and where improvements need to be made or don’t need to be made. I am always willing to help lead event planning or assist those who are spearheading an event. I also don’t dread the responsibility of going to Council meetings, but rather look forward to meetings and having the opportunity to plan events, and I also try to be as much as an active participant as possible when I am at meetings. I consider myself hardworking and never content with mediocrity, and I like to think I have brought these qualities to Council to help make the work we do even better than the years before, and I believe if I were elected I could help council continue to progress.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

I have been an active member of Community Council for the past two years, but I have also been a member of my grade’s community service coordinating group, a student ambassador for Hackley’s Admissions program by attending the open house in October and trying to give tours regularly, and I am a peer tutor. I am also a writer for The Dial and I like to think the pieces I have written have raised awareness about what great things people are doing at Hackley.

What are your goals if elected?

I think Council has done a great job this year and has made many improvements, but I still think there is room for further improvements. First and foremost, I think our main priority should be organizing council funds more efficiently. I would be more than happy to take charge of this, or help the newly elected Treasurer with this, because council’s lack of organization of funds has really hurt us and by opening a bank account, having a Council debit card, and creating a page or document where council members can interact about funds, would allow us to know how much money we actually have and whether we need to fundraise more. I also think it would be helpful to create a calendar and Google Drive sheet which indicate when dates for events are, when people need to complete tasks by, forms for students to complete if they wish to present an event, and a place to sign up to present their ideas. This would help members stay on top of things and complete their tasks on time, therefore allowing council to be more efficient. I would also like to help with creating a weekly bulletin, which Amanda Stern suggested in her campaign speech, to inform students of things that are going on at Hackley throughout the week. I also think we should try to fundraise more by selling more Hive gear, and also charging students to go to events like the Color Run or Woodstock (but not Snowball). Overall if I were elected I would love to spearhead organization and communication efforts so that council can be more connected and efficient as well as be a key leader in event planning.

Name: Lucia Yannuzzi

Junior Class Representative Candidate

Why would you be a good candidate for this position?

Looking at our grade, one of the first things I noticed this year was the lack of representation of new Hackley students in Council. I vehemently believe that the best thing for council is a fresh set of eyes, which I have to offer. I have the enthusiasm, integrity, and stubbornness that Council is in need of. To answer the question on why I would be a good candidate for this position, I can only say I want it, and when I believe something is needed, I do not back down. My personal persistence also applies to my public one in the sense that I will fight for decisions regarding my grade. I also know the value of teamwork through working and playing with sports teams all year long. Sports teams have also taught me that a team is not just found on a field, but in numerous other places where people depend on each other, like Council. I would bring an acute understanding of the importance of team dynamics necessary for an effective collaboration.

What have you done for the Hackley Community?

After a JV Lacrosse game, I brought my remaining fresh cut oranges to the Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse game next to us. The whole crowd, including myself, ate them and cast the peels into the woods. However, I felt this was wrong and with the help of some friends every single orange peel was collected. This action is very small, but I believe it shows the deep care I possess for our community. I go to as many sporting events as I can, and to all of the plays.

What are your goals if elected?

My goals if elected are to increase Council’s efficiency and communication methods. I would move to increase posts in Hackley’s Class of 2018 Facebook group, and these posts would let students know what happens in the Council meetings every Tuesday. I believe that even though only a handful of students are elected to Council, that our whole community should be involved in it.
