With a marketing budget alone estimated to be 70-130 million dollars, there are few movies that have been anticipated as much as Marty Supreme. Nothing short of blimps advertising the name and stunts scaling the Las Vegas Sphere followed in the promotion of this Golden Globe-winning production.
Released on Christmas Day in 2025, the comedy-drama Marty Supreme has been making waves in the cinematic universe and has captivated audiences of all ages, particularly Gen Z.
Starring Timothee Chalamet as Marty Mauser, Marty Supreme is inspired by the career of Marty Reisman, a table tennis hustler from the 1950’s. The story follows Marty, an ambitious young man from New York who obsesses over becoming the best ping-pong player in the world.
So why has this movie been so resonant with teen and young adult audiences? The promotion for this movie is unlike any other cinematic media. The campaign for the movie involved a whole new level of cultural participation. Chalamet's famous persona was a key factor in generating significant anticipation and attention leading up to the movie's release.
Hailed as one of Gen Z’s greatest actors, Chalamet has starred in numerous box office hits. Portraying a young Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown in 2024, Chalamet's career goes back to lead roles in Wonka, Beautiful Boy, and the Dune franchise.
In his promotion of the movie, Chalamet (as the first person to ever do so) climbed on top of the Las Vegas Sphere to promote Marty Supreme. Starring alongside Chalamet, Tyler Okonma, also known as Tyler, the Creator, helped launch the movie as a cultural phenomenon. Tyler plays Wally, Marty’s close friend who is deeply involved in Marty’s scams and hustles.
Celebrities such as Tom Brady, Lamine Yamal, Steph Curry, Karl Anthony Towns, Frank Ocean, and Central Cee have been seen sporting the Marty Supreme jackets, their stories aligning with the ambitiousness of Marty Mauser.
With celebrity endorsement and Chalamet’s unprecedented levels of engagement with the press and promotion, Marty Supreme became one of social media's most hyped movies. After watching it, I can definitely say it was worth the excitement.
To start off, director Josh Safdie establishes his signature chaotic editing, intense music, and gritty cinematography throughout the movie, complementing the intensity and “hustler scenes”.
This was his first solo directorial project since 2008; Safdie has often, throughout his career, co-directed and worked closely with his brother Benny, working on blockbuster films like Uncut Gems.
A favorite scene of mine showing Safdie's use of anticipation and tension was the London tournament sequence. These matches include fast editing and high levels of intensity; it felt as though each second carried so much significance.
Making it to the finals at Wimbledon, Marty faces off with Japanese table tennis player Koto Endo, who seeks victory and honor for not only himself but a struggling post-World War II Japan.
This match posed an incredible challenge for Marty, trying to play against Koto’s unorthodox yet powerful serve, with each and every point having so much gravity.
Portrayed by Koto Kawaguchi, who in real life is a Japanese deaf tennis player who won bronze at the 2022 Deaflympics, Marty Supreme not only has incredibly written and directed scenes but also an incredibly talented cast.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler Okonma, Kevin O’Leary, and Odessa A’Zion are some of the most recognizable and brilliant faces in the industry, their performances adding so much to the film.
Chalamet's dedication and enthusiasm, which he brought to promoting this project, are apparent in the quality of his acting. He does so well in capturing such a multifaceted character as Marty, displaying his arrogance, humor, chaos, and desperation all at once.
Critics say that this movie is a career-defining performance, showing Chalamet's versatility with his physical acting, portrayal of emotion throughout Marty’s mental breakdowns, and his ability to embody the fast-talking hustler personality.
Perhaps best of all was Chalamet's ability to convey the passion and hunger of Marty in his ambitious journey to become a world-class table tennis player.
After watching this movie, I think that the appeal of this movie to a generally younger audience is that a lot of people of a younger age demographic share a common component with Marty Mauser, in wanting to flourish and achieve whatever they can to make their mark on the world.
A lot of the social media hype around this movie includes the posts of celebrities on Instagram of a photo of their younger self with writing, “dream big”, catering to this idea of starting off as unknown, to becoming a household name.
Currently available for digital purchase on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video, Marty Supreme will soon be available for streaming on Max around April or May 2026.
